CITIZEN RIDE ALONG PROGRAM
The St. Joseph Police Department has a ride along program to which it is easy to apply. Contact the Support Services Division 816-271-4881 to obtain an application, or click here to open and print. Your application will be reviewed and a criminal history run. If you are approved (you must be over 18, and ot have a criminal record or warrants), they will schedule you a time and date for you to ride-along. Your ride-along will consist of actually riding in a working police car with a patrol officer. You will see the officer working during his/her shift…answering calls, stopping vehicles, and everything else that makes up a typical tour-of-duty. Riding along with an officer can be an eye-opening experience.
JOINT CITIZENS LAW ENFORCEMENT ACADEMY
Academy Application
The St. Joseph Police and Buchanan County Sheriff s Departments are proud to present a program from April 7 to May 26, 2010. We believe this eight-week academy will be both informative and fun as well as providing a new understanding of the day-to-day operations of our departments. Classes will be on Wednesday evenings from 6:00 to 9:30. The instructors will be certified Law Enforcement Officers from both the City and County Departments. For more informmation, please contact 816-236-1473 or 816-236-8894.
This is NOT a candidate school and is designed to only give a general hands-on experience as to how the two Departments operate. This program is not a fonul1 to debate previous enforcement contacts or personal grievances. Citizens are however, encouraged to participate in discussions as we learn from each other.
Class size is limited to thirty people, so those truly interested in making a commitment of one night a week for eight weeks in addition to a Patrol Division Ride Along should apply quickly. Completion of eight out of the eight classes is required to graduate. Applicants must be eighteen years of age or older and will be subject to a background investigation. You must be a resident of Buchanan County to apply.
Upon completion of the course, each participant will receive a diploma at a graduation ceremony conducted by the Chief of Police Chris Connally and Sheriff Mike Strong.
